Waalwege [paths along ancient irrigation channels]

The fruit farmers of the entire Vinschgau Valley and the Burggrafenamt (Meran and environs) have always had to struggle against drought. By way of a remedy they developed an irrigation system based on numerous channels known as waalen. The water was thus brought down from the higher valleys to the meadows and fields. It is possible to walk comfortably alongside the waalen on the so-called waalwege throughout the year. The minor gradients and beautiful views make the waalwege particularly popular with families.

Who ever said that a film must be made by human hand? That’s what the artist Franz Messner thought in the year 2000 when he had the idea of making 30 cinema chairs out of steel and chestnut-wood and placing them on the mountains over Merano, in front of the panoramic view of Rotstein-Kogel, halfway between Hafling and Vöran, thus creating a unique „cinema“
